Lakes Equity Working Group to Form

(Posted Jan. 6, 2022) The Reston Association Board of Directors voted in favor of forming an Equity Working Group with a focus on RA Lakes to review and recommend policies for the board to adopt, that will maximize the enjoyment of Reston’s four man-made lakes for all RA members, their families, and friends, including low-income households, low-income multifamily, renter households, Black, Hispanic and other racial minorities.

The working group will develop an equity framework that clearly defines current use policies, usage by demographics, and opportunities for improvement and makes policy recommendations that focus on equity and improved access for all. Focus areas will include improved access to lakes, equal opportunities for recreation and non-discriminatory signage and use policies welcoming all.

The vote at the Dec. 15, 2022, board meeting allows RA staff to seek candidates for the working group. Candidates will be interviewed by the Board Operations Committee at their Feb. 6 meeting and the board will approve the selections at the Feb. 23 board meeting. The working group will be comprised of eight member representatives, one voting RA staff representative and two non-voting RA staff liaisons.

Members interested in serving on the working group should complete and submit their application to bcopeland@reston.org no later than Friday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. EST.
