Shadowood Pool Project

Shadowood Pool Project

(UPDATE from Jul. 3, 2023) Due to unanticipated repairs following demolition of the main pool as well as some weather delays, Shadowood Pool is not anticipated to be reopened in time for the 2023 swim season. Work will continue though the fall and winter months on second phase elements and be ready for reopening for the 2024 swim season. Shadowood Pool, built in 1976, and located along South Lakes Dr, is one of Reston Association’s smallest pools at only 104,000 gallons (The average is 120,000+ gallons). It comprises of a 25-meter pool that is curved at one end with a centralized staircase and a small deep end. Due to this design, it does not accommodate lap swimming. However, two small slides are provided for open swim that were replaced in 2019. The parking lot, which is shared with the adjacent tennis court, is approximately 120ft from the front entrance of the bathhouse and has a slope that exceeds 5% (runs greater than 5% require handrails and landings per ADA code).

The pool’s interior plaster has been recoated multiple times in the past 10 years due to the heavy tree canopy that drop debris causing staining of the white plaster surface. As a result, an accumulation of plaster has occurred which undermines the plaster surface’s integrity causing delamination known as “pop-outs”. Prior to the next plaster installation, the manual removal or “chip-out” of the accumulated plaster must be removed. In 2021, a large-scale community input initiative was executed and determined that a refurbishment of Shadowood pool was desired. In November of 2022, the Board of Directors approved a budget of $1.1 million for construction in the 2023 capital budget.

The refurbishment currently includes the chip-out, tile, and coping as well as squaring of the main pool to permit lap swimming. A gas line will be run from South Lakes Dr to permit the installation of heaters to heat the main pool. This will heat the pool water to a more pleasant level due to the limited sun exposure from the heavy tree canopy. Repairs to the bathhouse roof, flooring, and exterior lighting will be performed. The disused wading pool will be converted into an interactive splash pad with a recirculating filtration system to save water. Lastly, several portions of the pool deck will be repaired or replaced. Due to the timing of engineering and permitting, the project will be phased in two parts.
