Reston Association Announces Grand Reopening of Lake Thoreau Pool

(Posted May 22, 2024) Following a four-year closure and $4M renovation project, Reston Association announces that Lake Thoreau Pool will reopen this week for guests. RA will host a Grand Reopening event and ribbon-cutting at the pool on Friday, May 24 beginning at 4:00 p.m. with refreshments, pool games, DJ entertainment and more.  

“We are thrilled to reopen this popular pool for our community,” said Laura Kowalski, Director of Recreation for Reston Association. “During last year’s community survey, our members told us just how much they value the pools and the sense of community they bring to Reston. We hope this pool will continue to bring enjoyment to our members for years to come.” 

Lake Thoreau Pool was closed following the 2019 season after crews found a deteriorating timber retaining wall had led to cracking in the pool shell and on the pool deck after nearly 40 years in operation. RA began a community engagement process in 2020 to learn community priorities for the pool, which included keeping the project simple and focused while at the same time making it ADA compliant and ensuring modern health and safety code compliance and maintaining the lakeside views. Construction began on the facility in summer of 2022 and was completed towards the end of 2023. 

The grand reopening event is open to the public. The pool will begin its regular operating schedule on Saturday, May 25.
