Glade Tennis Project

Glade Tennis Project Overview

Glade Tennis, originally built in 1970 as an asphalt tennis court, was rebuilt in 1999 into a clay court (one of two in RA’s, the other being North Hills). Glade Tennis is located adjacent to Glade Pool at the intersection of Soapstone Dr and Glade Dr. The court comprises of four subsurface irrigated, clay tennis courts that are lit with 1000w metal halide pole lights. The court has suffered multiple irrigation issues soon after its conversion with irregular hydration patterns and leaks. In 2018, a severe storm toppled several large pine trees into the court that further damaged the irrigation system and punctured the underground rubber membrane that holds the water beneath the court. In addition, several pole lights were bent, and fixture heads were damaged. Short-term repairs were made and have brought the court back into temporary operation.

To resolve the remaining issues at Glade Tennis, a complete renovation is necessary. To isolate and repair the irrigation system as well as the rubber membrane would require extremely invasive excavation work. This would result in a low probability of success as additional damage is likely to occur. Therefore, a renovation where the subsurface irrigation and membrane are completely replaced is required. In addition to that work, the replacement of the lighting system to LED can be performed to improve level of play as well as reduce energy consumption, maintenance costs, and nuisance lighting. This is very similar to a renovation that occurred at the North Hills Tennis clay courts in 2019.
