IT Issues and Goals Reviewed by RA Board and Committee Members

(Posted Jan. 12, 2021) An assessment of Reston Association’s IT infrastructure has been completed and was shared with the RA Board of Directors during a joint meeting with the newly formed Information Technology Committee last week. The independent review included a study of three IT incidents that occurred in the past two years as well as an overview of how the association can move forward with improving its technology systems.

Legal and forensic investigations of the three IT incidents found no membership personal information was accessed or acquired. However, one RA employee’s email account was accessed and used for a fraudulent payment. The report stated that RA “took immediate action to fortify systems and engaged third-party data and IT experts to conduct legal and forensic reviews.” A server crash and malware intrusion were also reviewed. Additionally, a Wipfli IT Maturity Assessment Report presented to board and committee members outlined how new technology could be used to make it easier and more efficient for members to do business with the association while safeguarding personal information. The report also explored ways for the RA to improve non-assessment revenue growth by implementing technological advancements. Key recommendations were made by Wipfli, which included upgrading RA’s cybersecurity and constituent-facing applications. Wipfli offered a roadmap on how RA could achieve its IT goals.
