“Science Camp was my
daughter’s favorite of all the camps she did
this
summer!”
Science activities supplement this
recreational camp program, brought to you in partnership
with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Camp
is based at the USGS facility. However, campers will
spend a good portion of their day outside and in traditional
camp activities.
CORE ACTIVITIES
Campers will…
- Take science to the cutting edge
of fun through experiments and exploration
- Practice
new computer skills
- Meet guest scientists and learn
about careers in science
- Go on field trips within
Reston and to selected sites outside of Reston

The Sky’s the Limit
Explore the world above your head
as you have never done before. Forecast the weather,
design our own kites, and explore the world of flying
animals. Visit Observatory Park at Turner Farm. Look
through the
telescope and learn about sundials. Fly high on your
trip to the Udvar Hazy National Air and Space Museum.

Subsurface Science
Get down to some serious fun. Explore
what is happening under your feet and learn how scientists
study the underground world. Take soil samples as you
visit different habitats on your trek around Reston.
Make your own stalactites like you would find in a
cave. Did you know it’s the International Polar
Year? Conduct your own icy studies. Make a magma experiment,
and visit Luck Stone quarry to really get down.

Going Green
How green is the earth? How green
are you? Join the Science Camp Green Team! Learn how
USGS scientists are involved in climate change studies
from the glaciers to the mountains. Learn why some
of our bird friends are finding new places to call
home. We’ll design our own studies to experiment
with glacial melt and global warming. Learn what it
means
to have a carbon footprint and ways we can all pitch
in to protect the planet. Climate Change is a hot topic!
Field trip to the U.S. Botanical Gardens.

A World of Science
The Olympics is a time when the
world comes together. Explore the world-wide frontiers
of science. Where are the competing countries located
on the globe? Learn about mapping and make your own
Olympic map. Explore how physics and natural science
affect the games and the
athletes as we delve into the physics of sports. Where
do all those medals come from? Take an elemental look
at bronze, silver, and gold, where are they found and
why do they shine? Create a shimmering craft, and take
part in the Science Camp Olympics. Try your hand at
panning for gold at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve.
