Science activities supplement this recreational camp program, brought to you in partnership with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Camp is based at the USGS facility. However, campers will spend a good portion of their day outside and in traditional camp activities.

CORE ACTIVITIES

Campers will…

  • Take science to the cutting edge of fun through experiments and exploration
  • Practice new computer skills
  • Meet guest scientists and learn about careers in science
  • Go on field trips within Reston and to selected sites outside of Reston
  • Enjoy Reston’s pools, pathways and natural areas
  • Participate in swimming, crafts and games

SESSIONS

1. June 23–July 3
No camp on July 4th. Special carnival extravaganza July 2nd.
The Sky’s the Limit

Explore the world above your head as you have never done before. Forecast the weather, design our own kites, and explore the world of flying animals. Visit Observatory Park at Turner Farm. Look through the
telescope and learn about sundials. Fly high on your trip to the Udvar Hazy National Air and Space Museum.

2. July 7–July 18
Subsurface Science

Get down to some serious fun. Explore what is happening under your feet and learn how scientists study the underground world. Take soil samples as you visit different habitats on your trek around Reston. Make your own stalactites like you would find in a cave. Did you know it’s the International Polar Year? Conduct your own icy studies. Make a magma experiment, and visit Luck Stone quarry to really get down.

3. July 21–August 1
Going Green

How green is the earth? How green are you? Join the Science Camp Green Team! Learn how USGS scientists are involved in climate change studies from the glaciers to the mountains. Learn why some of our bird friends are finding new places to call home. We’ll design our own studies to experiment with glacial melt and global warming. Learn what it means
to have a carbon footprint and ways we can all pitch in to protect the planet. Climate Change is a hot topic! Field trip to the U.S. Botanical Gardens.

4. August 4–August 15
A World of Science

The Olympics is a time when the world comes together. Explore the world-wide frontiers of science. Where are the competing countries located on the globe? Learn about mapping and make your own Olympic map. Explore how physics and natural science affect the games and the
athletes as we delve into the physics of sports. Where do all those medals come from? Take an elemental look at bronze, silver, and gold, where are they found and why do they shine? Create a shimmering craft, and take part in the Science Camp Olympics. Try your hand at panning for gold at Scott’s Run Nature Preserve.
