Overview

Resources for Better Aging (RBA), a project of Reston Association’s 55+ Advisory Committee and Reston for a Lifetime, offers information on a myriad of resources in the Reston area that provide services and support to enable aging in place. Designed for use by an individual, family member, or caregiver, the web pages include for-profit, nonprofit and other organizations. AARP Reston
Focus is on sharing practical resources like job, health, and financial workshops, fun activities and events. 

Aging in Place Database
Resource with 35+ links for older adults who want to remain in their homes as they age.

Aging Matters
Weekly interview program with podcast availability, 2 to 3 p.m., Tuesday on Arlington community radio WERA 96.7 - LP FM. Features guests with expertise on an array of aging topics.

Elderlink
Partnership of Inova, Fairfax Agency on Aging and Alzheimer's Association. Combined staffs offer capability to address specific needs of both clients and caregivers.

Fairfax County Services for Older Adults
Offers a variety of services for older adults, 50 years old and over in Fairfax County. Older Adult Services Help Line 703-324-7948, M-F 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Guide to Retirement Living Sourcebook
Retirement resources including home care, residential and medical.

Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA)
JCA, a recognized leader in meeting the needs of seniors and caregivers, serves individuals of all faiths, ethnicities and income levels. Helpline: 703-425-0999.

No Wrong Door Virginia
A virtual system and statewide network of shared resources designed to streamline access to long term services and supports connecting individuals, providers and communities.

Reston for a Lifetime Newsletter
Reston for a Lifetime (R4L), an organization that supports better aging, publishes a monthly newsletter.

Senior Navigator
A statewide resource for aging adults and caregivers. Topics include housing, adult day care centers, in-home care and transportation.

Shepherd's Center of Oakton – Vienna
Volunteer-based organization dedicated to promoting and supporting independent living for mature adults. Programs include caregivers support, transportation assistance and socialization.

Superior Options for Seniors (SOS)
Through professional guidance, SOS is a single resource for financial, housing, health, transition, estate & elder planning, and management services.

2-1-1 Virginia
A 24-7 service providing resources for home assistance, food stamps, and how to apply for medical coverage and housing needs.

Health and Wellness

Adult Protective Services
Adult protective services (APS) investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of adults 60 years of age and older and incapacitated adults age 18 or older. Contact APS to report abuse: 24-hour toll-free hotline: 888-832-3858.

Assisting Hands
Assisting Hands provides professional in-home care services allowing clients to remain in their homes. A 24/7 service includes grocery, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and transportation as needed.

District Mobile Dental
District Mobile Dental is a concierge oral healthcare provider, bringing services into the comfort of one's own home.

Family Doctor
Family Doctor, backed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, has a symptom checker that asks simple yes-or-no questions to narrow down potential causes and offers cautious treatment advice.

Graceful Care
Professional companion care offering assistance to older adults and those with disabilities in the comfort of their surroundings. Services may include fixing meals, shopping, transportation, and performing non-medical services.

Healthworks for Northern Virginia
Northern Virginia comprehensive family practice, providing health care services, regardless of ability to pay. Located in Herndon, services include women's health, adult services, dental, nutrition counseling, and medical and laboratory services.

Home Care Assistance
Providing the opportunity to live in your home safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.

Home Instead Senior Care
Offers individual, personal care for conditions related to dementia, Parkinson’s, diabetes, depression and others.

Insight Memory Care Center
Insight Memory Care Center provides care, support and education to those with memory impairments, throughout the course of the disease. The center is the only dementia-specific day center in the area and the only adult day health center in Northern Virginia with programs for late stages of Alzheimer's illness.

Long-Term Care
Official U.S. government website for long-term care. Website includes information designed to cover long-term services and supports, such as personal and custodial care in a variety of settings, as one’s home, a community organization, or other facility.

Medicare
Official U.S. government website for Medicare. Provides information on selecting a Health Plan to selecting Medicare Part D for prescription drugs, filing claims, and other resources.

Reston Hospital Center Hospice
Reston Hospital hospice care service is aimed at end-of-life care to meet the individual needs of terminally ill patients and their families. Offers guidance and referrals for hospice care centers in Northern Virginia.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers programs benefiting veterans and their families. Services include education opportunities, rehabilitation services, compensation payments for disabilities, home loan guaranties, pensions, and health care.

Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP)
VICAP is part of a national network of programs that offers free, unbiased, confidential counseling and assistance for people with Medicare.

Certified Aging In Place Specialists (CAPS)
The NAHB Remodelers of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in collaboration with NAHB 55+ Housing Council and others developed the CAPS program to address older adults desiring home modifications to meet changing mobility needs.

Home Remodeling to facilitate aging-in-place.

Rebuilding Together
Bringing volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners. This nonprofit organization makes critical repairs at no charge, with priority to seniors and people with disabilities.

Thumbtack
Free service for help finding handy helpers for interior painter, landscaping, carpet cleaning and other professional service.

Affordable Rental Housing Fairfax County
The office of Redevelopment and Housing Authority provides affordable housing for the disabled and older adults. Office: 703-246-5100.

Care Patrol
Free service to help determine one’s residential needs. Care advisor works with client via a personal tour to view available options.

Homeshare

Hunters Woods at Trails Edge
Opening in 2019, Trails Edge is a retirement community offering independent, assisted and memory care options. Located near Reston Town Center, Reston Community Center Hunters Wood and the Turquoise Nature Trail.

Hunters Woods Fellowship House
This residence, located in Hunters Woods Village Center, provides affordable housing to those meeting criteria under U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Lake Anne Fellowship House
This residence, adjacent to Lake Anne Village Center, provides affordable housing to those meeting criteria under HUD.

Oasis Senior Advisors

Free housing placement service for older adults seeking assisted living accommodations.

Sunrise Assisted Living in Reston
Located within walking distance to the Reston Town Center, this residence offers assisted living, memory care, coordination of hospice care, as well as short term
accommodations.

Tall Oaks Assisted Living
Tall Oaks, located in the Tall Oaks Village Center, offers rehabilitation services, as well as residential units for assisted living and memory care residents.

Recreation and Education

Encore Chorale of Reston
For all singers 55 and over, this community chorale led by a professional director, is for those who "used to sing" or "wish to sing" as well as for experienced singers. Singers may be seated for rehearsals and performances. Tuition covers rehearsals, performances, printed music and a practice CD.

Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association
The non-profit and its volunteers, along with County Cooperative Extension program, provide research-based horticultural information to home gardeners in Fairfax County.

Herndon Senior Center

Offers classes or as drop-in groups and available to those in Herndon as well as outside. Maintains a rides program for 55+ in Herndon zip code area. 703-464-6200

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University
Sponsored through George Mason University, OLLI offers discussion groups to individuals in their retirement years. Some classes are provided through the RCC Schedule of Classes. You do not have to be an OLLI member for these classes. Topics include current events, art & music, languages and more.

Reston Association 55+
RA offers trips, events, including free movie Wednesday on the 4th Wednesday of each month, for those adults 55+. To receive periodic emails and events calendar, contact Ashleigh Soloff, events supervisor. Ashleigh@reston.org or call 703-435-6577.

Reston Bike Club (RBC)
RBC is a volunteer, non-profit club with over 1,000 members. Organizes weekly bike rides and social events for all levels and abilities. Rides are held every weekend throughout the year.

Reston Community Center (RCC)
Provides a full range of services and events at two Reston sites: Lake Anne and Hunters Woods. Classes include topics such as computer learning, how to ride the metro, bridge instruction, woodworking and memoir-writing. RCC offers Fairfax County sponsored programs. Hunters Woods community center has an indoor pool and spa.

Reston Garden Club
Established in 1970, the club follows the vision of Reston for its beautification, environmental concerns and conservation of native plants and wildlife.

Reston Regional Library
The library offers book discussions, films, lectures and other activities as well as many newspapers and periodicals for onsite reading. 11925 Bowman Towne Drive.

Reston Runners and Walkers
A community of runners and walkers is available for all levels and abilities. Opportunities include a variety of courses as well as program/fitness training.

YMCA of Reston
Having completed major renovation October 2018, this location offers indoor track, cycling studio, expanded wellness floor space, as well as a pool for aerobics.

Transportation

CarFit
An educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them.

DMV Handicap Placard
Virginia's department of motor vehicles (DMV) issues permanent and temporary placards and license plates for people with permanent and military-related disabilities. Customer Service: 804-497-7100.

ENDependence Center of Northern Virginia, Inc.
Community resource and advocacy center is focused on empowering people with disabilities to live independently, offering skills training in using public transportation and other services.

Fairfax Connector
The largest local bus system in the Northern Virginia region. Provides service promoting greater mobility, safety of the community, while enhancing quality of life for residents.

Fairfax County Transportation Services

Transportation services for older adults, those with disabilities and vulnerable populations. Resources include taxi voucher program, Fastran and mobility management. Contact: 703-324-7948.

Logisticare
Fee-based transportation system for non-emergency medical appointments provided through certain medical plans and Medicaid. Provides 24/7 transportation service for the elderly and disabled.

MetroAccess
MetroAccess is the Washington area complementary paratransit service for people who are unable to use Metrobus or Metrorail public transit due to disability. Website provides eligibility details and application.

Reston Community Center Rides
A free, door-to-door transportation service for those 55 years and older who are no longer comfortable with driving. Contact: 703-476-4500.

Seniors On the Go
Seniors-On-The-Go (through Fairfax County) provides transportation for adults 65 and over. If criteria are met, the program provides subsidized taxicab fare in the form of vouchers.

Advocacy, Special Services and Additional Resources

Aging with a Disability
A Guide for Older Parents and Future Caregivers of Adults with Disabilities published by the ARC of Virginia.

Alzheimer's Association
This organization helps build an understanding of the illness and how it may affect the individual and family members. Offering support groups, the 24/7 hotline is: 800-272-3900.

Clear Captions
This is a no-cost federally funded program for qualified individuals whose hearing loss inhibits their phone use. Program provides IP captioned telephone service and phones.

Cornerstones
Cornerstones is a nonprofit Reston-based organization that promotes self-sufficiency by providing support and advocacy for those in need of food, shelter and affordable housing.

Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (State of Virginia)
DARS' mission is to improve the employment, quality of life, security, and independence of older Virginians, Virginians with disabilities, and their families.

Elder Mediation
An impartial mediator can improve a family’s conversations about aging transitions and hard-to-handle topics.

Fairfax County Coordinated Services
Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) promotes the well-being of individuals, families and communities by facilitating community engagement to identify areas of need.

FISH
FISH (Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help) responds to emergency requests for rent, utilities, medical prescriptions, and other critical needs, while working closely with social workers, local schools, hospitals, and other nonprofit organizations.

Legal Services of Northern Virginia
Professional services for child advocacy, elder law, family law, housing law and education law. Free assistance is available for low income adults.

NARFE #1241
Information for national active and retired federal employees association.

Tax Administration, Virginia
Provides real estate and vehicle tax relief to citizens who are either 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled who meet eligibility requirements.
Qualified taxpayers may also be eligible for tax relief for renters.

Useful Services Exchange (USE)
This is a community-based organization that enables members to exchange services without monetary cost. Services based on hours of credit as payment "in kind."

Veteran's Benefits

A private company helping wartime veterans 65 years and older eligible to a tax-free benefit called Aid and Attendance. The benefit is designed to provide financial aid to help offset the cost of long-term care. Office: 877-427-8065
