Bird Walks and Counts

Beginning and expert birders are invited to search for birds in some of Reston’s most beautiful natural areas. Monthly bird walks are sponsored by The Bird Feeder store, the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia, and Reston Association. There are no fees and registration is not required. The walks are listed in the nature programs section of this website.

Bird counts are held twice a year – a winter bird count in January and a breeding census in June. Please see Reston magazine for updates.

Keeping Domestic Cats Indoors

There is no question that birds are better off when cats stay indoors. Exact numbers are unknown, but scientists estimate that every year in the United States alone, cats kill hundreds of millions of birds, and more than a billion small mammals, including rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks. Feline predators include both domestic cats that spend time outdoors and stray cats that live in the wild, sometimes as part of colony.
