Metro Silver Line Overview

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is constructing a 23-mile extension of the Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport. The extension will serve the Reston-Herndon area, the state's second largest employment concentration. It will provide a one-seat ride from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington.

The project includes 11 stations. It will be built in two phases. Phase 1 will run from East Falls Church to Wiehle Avenue on the eastern edge of Reston and will be completed in 2014 (no specific completion date has been released by project officials). Phase 2 will run from Wiehle Avenue into eastern Loudoun County and is tentatively scheduled to open in 2018.

Wiehle Avenue Mixed-Use Project

Reston Station represents the beginning transformation of the Dulles Corridor into a transit-oriented, mixed-use, urban employment center. Being developed above and around the Reston Station Metro Facility, the core of Reston Station will integrate more than 1.3 million square feet of mixed-use development consisting of office buildings, restaurants, shops, a full-service hotel, and up to 900 residences.

The Reston Station Metro Facility is being constructed substantially underground through a public-private partnership of Comstock Partners and Fairfax County and will include a commuter park-and-ride facility, a transit bus depot, 2,300 commuter parking spaces and several hundred retail parking spaces.

The Reston Station Plaza, located above the Reston Station Metro Facility and adjacent to the Silver Line Metro Station, will form the core of the greater Reston Station area, and will include dedicated civic spaces. Design work is underway for the buildings planned to begin arriving at Reston Station shortly after the scheduled opening of the Reston Station Metro Facility.
