Reston
WINS!

America In Bloom Competition
Chicago, Illinois, September 20, 2003
Reston
has won a prominent nationwide beautification contest
called "America in Bloom" for its commitment
to the natural environment and for the dedicated
involvement of the community in these efforts. Reston
was a winner in its population category of 50,001-100,000,
and was also given special recognition for its community
involvement.
The America in Bloom program is more than just a beauty contest. Specially
trained, qualified judges volunteered their time to travel across the country
during the summer to evaluate participating communities in the following areas:-Community
Involvement
-Floral
Displays
-Landscapes
-Trees
-Environmental Awareness
-Heritage
-Tidiness
-Turf and Open Spaces
Based
on a marking grid, the judges assign points for effort
displayed by a community in the criteria mentioned
above. The communities are then awarded a bloom rating
based on their total score.
On
behalf of the Reston Association, Claudia Thompson-Deahl,
RA's Environmental Resources Manager, accepted the
awards at the ceremony held in Chicago, saying that "...This
is such an honor and Reston should be extremely proud,
as I am, for this outstanding achievement. This is
what Reston is all about-- and the community was
the big winner for being so involved and for caring
so deeply."

Jerry
Volloy, RA's former Executive Vice President and
CEO commented that, "This is a tribute to Reston
in so many ways: to the young men and women of the
Reston Association who work tirelessly in improving,
beautifying, and maintaining the natural environment
of our community, and to the Members of the Reston
Association and community who devote so much of their
time to that same goal. One of the major characteristics
of our community is the sylvan environment that is
Reston. It surrounds our entire community and every
neighborhood within it. Our open space and our care
and enjoyment of it defines our community of Reston."
America in Bloom (AIB) is a non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting nationwide beautification
programs and community involvement through the
use of flowers, plants, trees and other environmental
and lifestyle enhancements. Reston was one of over
40 communities in the competition. Some of the
other registrants were-Columbus, OH; Boston, MA,
Lewes, DE; Tallahassee, FL; and Encinitas, CA..
