The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is constructing a 23-mile extension (the Silver Line) of the Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport. The extension will serve the Reston-Herndon area, the state's second largest employment concentration. It will provide a one-seat ride from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington.
The project includes 11 stations. It will be built in two phases. Phase 1, which opened on July 26, 2014, runs from East Falls Church to Wiehle Avenue on the eastern edge of Reston. Phase 2 will run from Wiehle Avenue into eastern Loudoun County and is tentatively scheduled to open in 2018.
Reston Station represents the beginning transformation of the Dulles Corridor into a transit-oriented, mixed-use, urban employment center. Being developed above and around the Wiehle-Reston East station (click here to view a map of the station), the core of Reston Station will integrate more than 1.3 million square feet of mixed-use development consisting of office buildings, restaurants, shops, a full-service hotel, and up to 900 residences.
The station facility is being constructed substantially underground through a public-private partnership of Comstock Partners and Fairfax County and includes a commuter park-and-ride facility, a transit bus depot, 2,300 commuter parking spaces, a bike room and several hundred retail parking spaces.
The Reston Station Plaza, located adjacent to the Silver Line Metro Station, will form the core of the greater Reston Station area, and will include dedicated civic spaces.
The Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station is located along the Dulles Toll Road (route 267) and is near the intersection of Wiehle Avenue and Sunset Hills Road. The station has a parking garage, a bicycle room and can be accessed by various commuter buses, including the Fairfax Connector line.
