The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is constructing a 23-mile extension (the Silver Line) of the Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport. The extension will serve the Reston-Herndon area, the state's second largest employment concentration. It will provide a one-seat ride from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington.
The project includes 11 stations. It will be built in two phases. Phase 1, which opened on July 26, 2014, runs from East Falls Church to Wiehle Avenue on the eastern edge of Reston. Phase 2 will run from Wiehle Avenue into eastern Loudoun County, and includes the construction of the Reston Town Center Station. While throughout 2018 it was reported that Phase 2 is on track and scheduled to open in July 2020, recent slips in the construction schedule and delays over faulty concrete panels will likely see the opening in September or October of 2020.
The Reston Town Center Metro Station will ultimately include a pedestrian bridge crossing to both the north and south sides of the Dulles Toll Road/Dulles Airport Access Highway, bus drop-off and pickup on either side of the station, a Kiss & Ride on either side of the station, and bicycle parking facilities. It is anticipated that trains to and from this station will run every six minutes during peak travel hours.
The Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station is located along the Dulles Toll Road (route 267) and is near the intersection of Wiehle Avenue and Sunset Hills Road. The station has a parking garage, a bicycle room and can be accessed by various commuter buses, including the Fairfax Connector line.
