Another large and high visibility redevelopment plan is being reviewed by Fairfax County for possible approval in the fall of 2019. The application for Campus Commons, an office park at the southeastern corner of Wiehle Avenue and the Dulles Toll Road, has been under review for several months and recently was reviewed again by the Reston Planning and Zoning Committee.
The current site has two mid-1980s office buildings, totaling 235,000 square feet. The development goal for this Transit Station Area is a 50/50 mix of residential and commercial development. These two buildings will remain and approximately 630 residential units will be added in one mid-rise and one high-rise building. An additional office building is also planned at the corner of Wiehle Avenue and Sunrise Valley Drive. The proposal also includes approximately 26,000 square feet of new retail.
One of the main concerns expressed thus far by Reston citizens is the pedestrian connection to the Wiehle Reston East Metro station. Currently the applicant has proposed an at-grade crossing of Wiehle Avenue and some have suggested an underpass to the Comstock site on the other side of Wiehle Avenue from this site.
The current plans are available to review on RA’s website, and the applicant will be seeking approval from the Planning and Zoning Committee in July or August of 2019, before their scheduled Planning Commission hearing in September.
