Design Review Board (DRB) Meetings

Agenda

Welcome to the weekly Design Review Board (DRB) meeting. If this is your first time here, you may find this information helpful.

All nine DRB members are volunteers and Reston residents; six are professionals (architects, landscape architects, or land planners) and three are lay members. The DRB meets at least three times a month in panels of three and once a month as a Full Board. At any panel meeting, at least two members are professionals and one is a lay member unless there has been a temporary substitution.

At the beginning of the meeting, there will be a brief period for general Member comments concerning the design review process but not having to do with a specific application. After Member comments, applicants who are scheduled in advance will meet with the Board to discuss their individual submissions. You may confirm your agenda number on the white board at the side of the room or on the agenda near the sign-up sheet.

When your address is called, you may move to the table and sit down to discuss your application with the DRB members. If you have anyone with you to help with the review (contractor, architect, etc.), they should move to the table with you and you should identify them to the DRB members. Any registered Affected Parties will also be invited to sit at the table.

At the end of your application review, the DRB members will make a decision. This decision does not become final for a full week because the decisions of the meeting are sent to all nine DRB members for review and comment. Besides commenting on a decision, if they believe it is appropriate any two DRB members or the DRB Chair may request a hearing by the Full Design Review Board of any application reviewed at the meeting. One week after the meeting, the decision becomes final and will be mailed to you, therefore, please do not undertake any construction until you have received the final decision letter and final approval.

The proceedings are informal and relaxed, with the goal of open and constructive dialogue between DRB members and applicants. Please feel free to actively participate during discussion of your application until the discussion is turned over to the DRB. Please remember that it is the DRB members who lead the discussion and determine when it is time to make a decision.
