(UPDATED May 30, 2019) Reston Association is working to address issues that led to a few pools being closed over the Memorial Day weekend. Most of the closings were related to a shortage of lifeguards to staff all of RA’s 15 outdoor pools. Some lifeguards called in sick. Additional problems were related to equipment failures and vandalism.
All aquatics facilities, except Lake Thoreau pool, have been open as scheduled this week. Click here to download the RA pool schedule. Lake Thoreau pool was being inspected for broken glass on Tuesday after the facility was vandalized prior to the holiday weekend. The pool was set to reopen at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the closing of some pools last weekend,” said the association’s CEO, Hank Lynch. “Like many community and recreational associations in our area, RA is trying to meet the challenge of hiring staff for various summertime positions. With the unanticipated shortage of lifeguards creating a potential safety issue, we felt the most prudent thing to do was to close some pools and invite folks, through our social media channels, to visit one of our several other pools that remained open through the weekend.”
Because of ongoing staffing shortages and to ensure safety precautions, RA pools will operate on a modified schedule for the weekend of June 1-2.
RA will be hosting two job fairs in hopes of recruiting more lifeguards for the 2019 season. The dates for the job fairs are May 30 at 6 p.m. at Newbridge Pool and June 13 at 4 p.m. at Lake Newport Pool. Traditionally, the association has hired high school and college students to staff its pools. RA adjusts its seasonal pool schedule to coincide with the availability of students who are off from school. Please go to our jobs page to apply for regular and seasonal positions at RA.
